World Book Day 2024

World Book Day aims to help change children’s lives by making reading together and reading for pleasure a habit for life.

Reading for pleasure opens up a world of possibilities for children, allowing them to visit places and meet characters that would be impossible in the real world.

Sharing stories together for just ten minutes a day encourages a love of reading and it’s fun for everyone! To be able to read is amazing as it can be done anywhere and everywhere - from breakfast to bedtime! A book can be read in the park, in a car, or curled up on the sofa – reading and sharing stories can happen anywhere at any time.

Book Fair

We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to have a book fair at Dudley Wood.

The fair will be in school from Wednesday 28th February - Wednesday 6th March

As with previous years, during the course of the week, each class will have a lesson with the book fair where they will share a story and explore the books. Each child will be able to create a wish list of the titles that they would like to read which they can then share with you at home. Once you have decided which books you would like to purchase an online payment system has been set up to avoid the need to send money into school.

Once you have made a payment online, the completed wish list should be returned to school and your child will be given the books they have bought.

Online orders must be placed before 4pm on Tuesday 5th March.

Below you can find a mini catalogue with a small selection of the books that will be in our fair along with an example of the wish list that your child will bring home during our book fair week.

The payment link and QR code will be accessible throughout our book fair.

Book Week and Dress Up Day

Throughout the week, the children will take part in lots of reading related activities including Book Bingo and having other teachers reading them stories.

We would love to welcome parents and carers into school during the week to share a story with their child

Our favourite part of the week, and to help celebrate World Book Day, will be on Thursday 7th March as Dudley Wood are having a Dress Up Day! All the children and adults will be able to become the book character of their dreams and throughout the day, the children will take part in a range of book related activities that should inspire and further develop their love of reading.

We would love the children to dress up for the day. They may decide to dress up as their favourite book character or create their own T-shirt emblazoned with a book quote, or even dress up as a character from a text they have been exploring in English lessons.

EYFS - Will EYFS be overrun with gingerbread men, giants and Cinderellas?

Year 1 - Will Beegu or any other aliens crash land for the day at Dudley Wood?

Year 2 - Bears have been a common theme in the books.  How many will turn up playing a piano or chasing Goldilocks?

Year 3 - Flowers could begin to spring up everywhere is Zara walks through the door.

Year 4 - Will snow and ice be brought along for the day by Tom

Year 5 - What weird and wonderful creatures will wander out of the wardrobe from Narnia?

Year 6 - How many mechanicals created by Absalom will turn up for registration?

If none of these characters spark your imagination, will Little Miss Sunshine or Mr Tickle will join lessons, or perhaps Hermione Granger and Harry Potter will appear out of the floo network?

Sharing a Book

During Book Week, we would love to invite parents and carers into school to share a book with their child - this could be a book from home, your child's favourite book from the class library, or their reading book. This opportunity will be offered to different year groups throughout the week, as indicated in the table below. The sessions will start at 9am and last for around half an hour.
