Promoting and Celebrating Reading

Reading Incentives

In Class

To encourage pupils to read or to celebrate them reading; teachers develop and use a range of incentives and these vary from class to class, for example, certificates are given when pupils achieve their individual reading target; children are chosen to share their book with the class at the end of the day – the children see this as a ‘treat’; the children are rewarded with raffle tickets for a small prize draw; there is a ‘Reader of the Week’ award.

Whole School

  • Reader of the Month - Nursery to Year 6 join in with the whole school’s reading incentive: Reader of the Month, where teachers choose a pupil to award a certificate and book to, for their obvious interest in, and enjoyment of, books; or their effort or improvement in reading

  • Poetry Day - when every class learns a poem by heart and recites or performs it for the rest of the school.

  • World Book Day - when we enjoy dressing up as favourite book characters or wearing a T-Shirt with a quote from a favourite book, as well as completing a range of fun activities linked to a book. Pupils have the opportunity to buy books from the Scholastic Book Fair during the week.
