Dudley Wood Primary School and Pre-School
World Book Day aims to help change children’s lives by making reading together and reading for pleasure a habit for life.
Reading for pleasure opens up a world of possibilities for children, allowing them to visit places and meet characters that would be impossible in the real world.
Sharing stories together for just ten minutes a day encourages a love of reading and it’s fun for everyone! To be able to read is amazing as it can be done anywhere and everywhere - from breakfast to bedtime! A book can be read in the park, in a car, or curled up on the sofa – reading and sharing stories can happen anywhere at any time.
Book Fair
We are thrilled to once again have the opportunity to have a book fair at Dudley Wood.
The fair will be in school from Thursday 27th February - Wednesday 5th March.
As with previous years, during the course of the week, each class will have a lesson with the book fair where they will share a story and explore the books. Each child will be able to create a wish list of the titles that they would like to read which they can then share with you at home. Once you have decided which books you would like to purchase an online payment system has been set up to avoid the need to send money into school.
Once you have made a payment online, the completed wish list should be returned to school and your child will be given the books they have bought.
Online orders must be placed before 4pm on Tuesday 4th March.
Below you can find a mini catalogue with a small selection of the books that will be in our fair along with an example of the wish list that your child will bring home during our book fair week.
The payment link and QR code will be accessible throughout our book fair.

Book Week and Dress Up Day
Throughout the week, the children will take part in lots of reading related activities including a book quiz and having other teachers reading them stories.
As we did last year, we would love to welcome parents and carers into school during the week to share a story with their child
Our favourite part of the week, and to help celebrate World Book Day, will be on Thursday 6th March as Dudley Wood are having a Dress Up Day! All the children and adults will be able to become the book character of their dreams and throughout the day, the children will take part in a range of book related activities that should inspire and further develop their love of reading.
We would love the children to dress up for the day. They may decide to dress up as their favourite book character or create their own T-shirt emblazoned with a book quote, or even dress up as a character from a text they have been exploring in English lessons.
As part of the World Book Day celebrations, we will be running a competition across the school to create a character or scene from a favourite book. The deadline for the entries will be Wednesday 5th March and winners will be announced the following day on World Book day with some amazing prizes up for grabs. We will pick a winner from each phase in school. Please make sure your child includes their name and class on their entry.
Reception - Can you decorate a paper plate following either the them of your fabourite book or your favourite character?
KS1- Can you decorate a potato to look like your favourite character?
KS2- Can you create a diorama in a shoe box depicting a scene from your favourite book or create a scene in a plastic jar?
Sharing a Book
During Book Week, we would love to invite parents and carers into school to share a book with their child - this could be a book from home, your child's favourite book from the class library, or their reading book. This opportunity will be offered to different year groups throughout the week, as indicated in the table below. The sessions will start at 9am and last for around half an hour.
