John Thompson - Chair
I am pleased to introduce myself as the Chair of Governors.
I have a professional background in education and spent most of my working life in Dudley, the last 20 years as Headteacher of Pensnett School and then Principal at Thorns Community College. Since taking early retirement, I have worked as an educational consultant including the training of senior leaders in schools who wish to become Headteachers.
I have a ‘soft spot’ for Dudley Wood, as I was born and lived as a boy in Saltwells Road and Dudley Wood Primary was my first school. I have fond memories of Maypole Dancing and nature walks!
I enjoy spending some of my time each year in my house in Spain. I keep myself fit and regularly participate in golf, skiing, cycling and swimming. I also enjoy ‘performing’ on stage for the local light operatic and drama group.
I lead a team of enthusiastic, hard-working and committed governors who work with the Headteacher and staff to ensure:
• that conditions are such that every child can achieve to the very best of their ability
• that the school functions effectively
• that the school continues to improve.
As a Governing Body we are committed to making ourselves known to parents and to the school’s wider community and want to ensure that through a variety of ways we are both accessible to everyone and keep everyone informed in respect of the activities that we undertake on behalf of the school.
If you would be interested in:
• finding out more about the work of the governors
• becoming a governor
or if you would like to discuss any aspect of the work of the school, please contact me at the school.
Best wishes, John Thompson Chair of Governors.
Rev. Alicia Baker - Vice Chair
Hello! I'm Alicia, the vicar at St John's Church just down the road. As a vicar, I really enjoy having a role within the community of Dudley Wood, and so I was really pleased to be asked to be a governor at Dudley Wood School. I used to be a music teacher many years ago and so I know how hard everyone works here to make it such an encouraging and engaging place for all the pupils.
This is a really lovely school to be involved in and it's great to see how we are continually making improvements for the sake of the children and the learning environment. Although great importance is given to Maths and Reading and Writing, the work with drama and music and sport is also a real bonus at this school which gives children the opportunity to excel in many different ways.
We really enjoy school visits at the church at various times during the year as well as taking assemblies too. Everyone is always keen to be involved and to learn.
I am a Governor at Dudley Wood Primary School. I live locally in the Dudley Wood area and my daughter attended the school. I also attended Dudley Wood Primary back in the 1980s and have nothing but fond memories of my time as a pupil.
I am now a senior healthcare professional in the demanding role of a Paramedic and I have been able to support the school in ensuring robust care and safeguarding practices.
I have enjoyed learning about and contributing to curriculum development and pupil progress. I have been a link governor for Year 4 and have had the privilege of visiting to see how the children are progressing and enjoying their lessons. Literacy lessons are always my favourite as I love reading!
Being a Governor helps me to understand and support school leaders as they continually work to improve outcomes for all pupils. I am extremely proud to be a governor of such a happy and successful school.
I have been employed at Dudley Wood Primary School for over 20 years. I am the School Business Manager and I work closely with the Headteacher and Senior Leaders contributing to the strategic development of the school and overseeing its financial management.
I am married with two children and two grandchildren, who keep me very busy! I have been a member of the Governing Body since 1999, firstly as a Staff Governor and presently as a Co-opted Governor.
Dudley Wood Primary School is a very special place and it is a privilege to be part of a committed, motivated and caring team, where staff, governors and parents work together to ensure the best possible education for our children.
Mrs S Guest
“The members of the Governing Board share my passion and commitment for school improvement and excellence for all. The Governors have an excellent understanding of the work of the school and are skilful at asking pertinent questions to challenge my leadership and to enable further improvement. I am very grateful for their engagement in all aspects of school life and for the support and loyalty, which they extend at every opportunity.”
