Healthy Choices at Break Time

Dear Parents,

Staying healthy is an important part of growing up. Eating well can help you stay physically healthy and emotionally healthy too. If you are eating the right food and keeping fit, your body will be strong enough to help you cope with stress and illness.

It can be hard to keep to a healthy diet especially when there’s a temptation to eat sweets and junk food. But it’s important to get the right balance in your diet.

At school we have been discussing healthy choices with the children. We downloaded the change 4 life Food Scanner App which is free from the App Store and we were shocked at the amounts of sugar, salt and saturated fats that were in our snacks.

Together with the children, we have decided to eat healthy snacks at break times.

From September we will not allow the following snacks at break time:

Chocolate

Sweets

Crisps

We ask you instead to search for a healthier alternative. Use the app to check snacks - some of the results are surprising!

To help you to choose healthy snacks, some of the children are working with the cook to set up a ‘Fruit Bar’ at break time (this is the children’s idea) and we will be selling a variety of fruit and healthy snacks along with toast. We will price up the snacks in September but they will be no more than 35p.

The children will set up and run the ‘Fruit Bar’ and I am very proud of this new initiative.

It is so important to teach children about healthy choices. I have spoken to many of you and know that you think our new ‘Healthy Snacks at Break Time’ initiative is a good idea to educate the children and keep them healthy.
